Biography

Salman Shafi is an aerospace engineer, educator, and program coordinator specializing in uninhabited and remotely piloted aircraft systems (UAS/RPAS). He holds a Master of Applied Science in Aerospace Engineering from Carleton University, where his graduate research focused on terrain draping and following algorithms for geophysical survey applications. At Carleton, Salman teaches Uninhabited Aircraft Systems Design, a graduate course focused on mission design, operations, and risk assessment through project-based learning. He also serves as Program Coordinator for the NSERC CREATE Uninhabited Aircraft Systems Training, Innovation and Leadership Initiative (UTILI), managing student funding, partnerships, and internships while fostering collaborations with industry and government. His applied work spans research, development, and deployment of UAS/RPAS technologies, with experience in navigation, sensing, and autonomous operations. Beyond research and teaching, he has led STEM outreach initiatives to increase diversity in engineering and contributed to Indigenous education programs that expand access to aerospace learning. His current focus continues to combine innovation, education, and real-world applications of UAS.
